My First Amendment

Make your voice heard.

Well it,s done, a new President has been elected. I am old enough to have seen it many times before. I have heard all the past comments from: the Communists will be at our doorstep tomorrow and Socialism will triumph to God's will has been done. None have actually proved to be the truth. So, lets all take a deep breath, no matter how you voted and know the Republic was designed with many checks and balances. The Democrats do not hold a 60 vote super-majority (to choke off a filibuster) so anything too radical will need some Republican support to pass. That being the case, lets all get on with our lives and see how it goes.
Again, no matter what your politics this was truly an historic election in the eyes of the world for obvious reasons. Lets wish President Obama and his family the best but keep our eyes wide open and not wide shut. J. Prokop

Well said sir. We know this is not the end of our great nation but yet another opportunity for us all to be great. We must all be diligent, regardless of political party, to stay informed and not take every report at face value. I agree that this election was historic, but, it was historic in many ways, one of which was the number of people who voted. This is wonderful that so many are taking part in the process but there is more to the process than just voting. We must all become educated, understand what you are voting for and the importance you play.
Last night after I had finished voting I spoke with a friend, this friend told me she had not voted. When I asked her why she flatly said "my vote doesn't matter any way. O'bama has already won." Mind you this was an O'bama supporter. Now her vote may not have affected the outcome of the presidential election, this is true, but what she did not know was how close the propositions and state amendments were that were on our ballot. She did not realize how close the races were for her own representative in congress. This truly saddened me, because in this age of instant information, so many people did not know how important their own local elections were. Most of them did not even realize that there was more to the ballot than the presidential election. Change in this country has never started at the top, it always comes from the citizens who wish to free themselves from the shackles of oppression imposed upon us by our government. To make a long story short I hope that we will all make more of an effort to understand the realities of our own lives and how our taking part in the process can make a change for the better.
